Canale Monterano

Situated at 50 km North of Rome, just near the border of Viterbo province, founded at the end of ’500 by Tuscany and Umbria peasants, called  to deforest the wood and the country and so to recover new land. The first inhabitants lived in an isolated and insane place.
The first huts were those used for agriculture and only when people were numerous  first buildings in stone were built.
The deforestation of the hill formed a canal from North to South along which people concentrated to live. That canal is now the principal street of the village with the first artisan stores and the little church, today called “ Oratory”. The church is devoted to Saint Mary ascended to heaven.
After its annexation to the Italian State the village was called Canale Monterano thanks to its native form and to the presence of the inhabitants from Monterano.

Ancient Monterano

The territory of Monterano represents one of the most interesting area in Lazio, because of its rich historical memories and thanks to the Regional Natural Monterano Reserve  so that since 1988 Canale Monterano is part of the Regional Protected Areas.
Monterano was inhabited for a long period since the Bronze Age, but it had had two significant historical periods: during the end of the Etruscan period with a great economical and cultural development and during the High Medieval period when it was the seat of an important diocese comprising an area from the Lake of Bracciano to the Tolfa Mountains.
In about the second half of ‘600 Altieri family became the owner of the large estate and Gian Lorenzo Bernini had the task to improve the urban aspect of the village., so he planned the church, the monastery of St Bonaventura and the façade of the Duke palace with its wonderful fountain of the Lion. The lion became the symbol of the village history and traditions .Today the fountain and the lion statue can be admired in the principal square of the village and inside the town council.
A century laterFrench troops occupying the Papal state attacked Monterano already depopulated because of its insane air so that all the inhabitants moved to Canale and to Montevirginio.
Nowadays Monterano is one of the most beautiful dead cities in Lazio. It differs thanks to its splendid remains of the castle, of a church and of a wonderful Roman aqueduct, but mainly thanks to its unpolluted territory rich of rare natural beauties.
Another important characteritic is that is wounded deeply by water courses, the richest of them is Mignone river having birth from Sabatini Mountains up to Tarquinia Sea having a course of about 62 kms. In the Natural Reserve of Monterano the torrent is rich of many species of invertebrata and of an important fauna allowing the ecosystem around easily to live.
The banks of the river are bordered by wonderful woods of willows, poplars and alders. Here we can find animals such as Kingfisher, water snake and the marsh tortoise.

Originally called Sassano Mount but later in honour of Virginio Orsini, founder of the monastery was renamed Montevirginio.  Virginio Orsini, cardinal and friar son of the Duke of Bracciano, built the hermitage , renounced his estate and obliged his brother to give a considerable amount of money to the barefooted Carmelites in order to build a monasteryt ( 1651 /1668.)
The monastery had a rectangular plant, two floors and undergrounds with cellars, hoven, carpentry. This building became an important religious centre, but also a concern for the many workers living nearby. It had woods, lands, vegetable gardens, vineyards, orchards, cattlesheds. It managed a stone querry and a kiln.
The peasants living in that place and having to move to leave place to the monastery began building their new houses North of the mount giving birth to a new village called Montevirginio concentrated around a large and comfortable circus. The Altieris managed the urban planning.
